
There is some very interesting research on Vitamin D out there but definitely not enough to give the complete green light on supplementation. At least this is what most doctors in the know will say. Now there are a few mavericks out there who contend that humans need to supplement with Vitamin D for a number of reasons. For one, we are very deficient in this all important steroid precursor.
The RDA is 400 international units but MD's such as Dr. Mercola and a few others, think as adults, we need to be in the 5000 i.u. range. They say there are a lot of benefits we could be seeing with Vitamin D supplementation. I am in no position to prescribe Vitamin D but I would recommend that you look into the matter and find out everything you can and make a decision for yourself.

Robb Wolf discusses vitamin D in one of the episodes of The Paleo Solution. He recommends supplementing with a few thousand ius depending on size but I for got the range.
We have had a ton of lectures on this in school and your cells need around 4000 i/u of vit D a day to function at full capacity. I don't want to get all technical, but that's the basic gist. It's pretty interesting stuff!
